Jim Brown

Jim Brown is widely considered the greatest running back in NFL history. In nine seasons with the Cleveland Browns (1957–1965), he led the league in rushing eight times, was named NFL MVP three times, and retired at the peak of his powers still holding the league's all-time rushing record — a mark that stood for nearly two decades. He was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 1971 and went on to a prominent second career as a film actor.

What set Brown apart off the field was his lifelong commitment to social change. In the late 1980s he founded the Amer-I-Can Foundation, a life-management and gang-intervention program that has worked with incarcerated individuals, former gang members, and at-risk youth in cities across the country, teaching conflict resolution and personal responsibility through an intensive 18-week curriculum. Brown personally brokered a landmark 1992 gang truce in Los Angeles credited with helping reduce inner-city violence, and Amer-I-Can continues to operate as a nonprofit dedicated to expanding those services to communities that couldn't otherwise afford them.

Jim Brown passed away in May 2023 at age 87. In 1997, Westcoast Sports Associates honored him with the Roy Firestone Award for a legacy that extended far beyond his records on the field.
